This Projection Weld Screw features three precision-welded projections located underneath the head. This design allows for flush mounting of the weld screw onto its designated surface. The three projections are of equal height, diameter, and mass to facilitate a properly balanced and positioned weld. This weld screw is designed for through-hole applications, is self-locating, and eliminates the need for additional fixturing. 1. The working principle of projection welding:
Projection welding is an evolution of spot welding. Generally speaking, a mountain point is punched out on one of the two plates and then welded. Due to the high current density, it overcomes the defect of nugget offset during spot welding. One or more nuggets form at the joint.
2. Features of the projection welding process:
During projection welding, the electrode must drop rapidly as the bump is sub-collapsed; otherwise, spatter will occur due to pressure loss. Therefore, a projection welding machine with good electrode followability should be used.
The electrode pressure should ensure that the bumps are fully sub-collapsed at the welding temperature, so the workpieces can fit closely. If the pressure is too high, the bumps will be crushed prematurely, and the function of projection welding will be lost.
The reduced flow density will reduce joint strength, and the pressure will be too low to cause heavy splashing.
Usually, the welding time for projection welding is longer than that for spot welding, and the flow is lower. Multi-point projection welding has a slightly longer welding time than single-point projection welding to reduce the heating differences at each point caused by inconsistent bump heights.
The current required for each spot of projection welding is lower than that for spot welding at the same spot, but it must be sufficient to melt the bump before it is completely crushed. The welding current is approximately the current required for each bump multiplied by the number of bumps.
Application notes
This projection weld screw is self-locating and provides a flush surface for easy attachment of mated components. Three symmetrical weld projections beneath the head provide a robust, properly positioned, well-balanced weld. No special tooling or fixturing is required.
