Countersunk, Knurled Rivet Nut Application Notes:

The grip range of these outserts can be affected by the type of sheet material being used.

It is recommended that a few test installations be conducted to determine the appropriate grip range for your specific application.

The countersunk head, knurled, European-style rivnut, is installed using pneumatic, hydraulic, or manual hand tools.

The installation process is simple, easily controlled, and less labor-intensive than other processes associated with nuts and bolts.

When properly inserted, the rivnut head will be flush with the surrounding sheet material.

These industrial fasteners will do the job for flush installation and excellent spin-out resistance.

They can effectively reduce assembly costs by eliminating processes associated with the assembly of nuts and bolts.

Blue Zinc ROHS Rivet Nut Countersunk Knurled Open End, often referred to as Rivnuts, Blind Nuts, or blind nut riveter kit,

is a form of internally threaded insert that is used in applications where the material thickness is too small to tap a conventional thread.

Using rivet nuts creates a vital thread in thin sheets of material for high-strength fastening from bolts and other threaded articles.

The countersunk head is often chosen as it will sit flush within the application, leaving an aesthetically pleasing flat and smooth finish.

The full countersunk head of this rivet is stronger than the reduced countersunk type but is also more profound,

meaning that it can only be used in material thicknesses greater than 1.5mm. Use the blind rivet nut setting tool to install.

The knurled body of the countersunk rivet provides increased resistance to turning in the application, especially when installed in softer materials.

The open-end style allows the stud or male threaded component to thread through the rivet nut without limiting the length or protrusion of the male threaded part.

Installed with a unique tool, these Countersunk open-end rivet nuts with a knurled body are engaged by the tool’s threaded stud,

which pulls upwards and deforms the unthreaded section of the rivet nut, causing expansion under the reverse side of the material and provides a high strength permanent thread in thin sheet material.

Available from Juxin fasteners in materials and finishes that include zinc-plated steel, A2 stainless steel, and A4 stainless steel.

Available in diameters ranging from M3 to M12 to suit various grip ranges.

Non-standard sizes and materials are available to order as specials, including small-volume manufacture, modifications, and bespoke parts made to drawings. Minimum order quantities apply.

Why Use Blue Zinc Countersunk Knurled Rivet Nuts?

1. Flush Installation for Precision Assemblies

The countersunk head allows the rivet nut flange to sit within a matching recess in the host material.

When the mounting hole and countersink are correctly prepared, the installed flange can sit flush with the panel surface.

This configuration is useful where protruding fastener heads could interfere with mating components, access covers, sliding parts, or adjacent equipment.

Applications include:

  • Industrial equipment covers

  • Electrical enclosure panels

  • Automotive interior brackets

  • Fabricated machinery housings

  • Sheet metal access panels

  • Removable equipment assemblies

The countersink angle, major diameter, and depth must match the approved fastener drawing.

2. Knurled Body for Improved Spin-Out Resistance

The external knurling increases mechanical engagement between the rivet nut and the mounting hole.

Compared with a smooth-body insert, the knurled configuration can improve resistance to rotation when installed in a compatible host material.

This is particularly useful for assemblies where screws are tightened, removed, and reinstalled during equipment maintenance.

However, spin-out resistance is influenced by several factors:

  • Panel material and hardness

  • Installation hole diameter

  • Knurl geometry

  • Grip range

  • Installation stroke

  • Backside deformation

  • Applied tightening torque

Knurling should not be treated as a guarantee against rotation. The installed assembly must be tested against the application's torque requirements.

3. Blue Zinc Plating for Industrial Corrosion Protection

The steel rivet nut is supplied with a blue zinc-plated finish.

Zinc plating provides sacrificial corrosion protection for steel in suitable service conditions.

For OEM purchasing programs, the plating specification should identify the coating thickness, passivation system, corrosion performance, and applicable restricted-substance requirements.

Where required, zinc electroplating may be specified using ASTM B633 or applicable ISO coating standards.

Blue zinc appearance alone does not establish RoHS or REACH compliance. Compliance documentation should be confirmed for the actual supplied finish.

4. Open-End Design for Flexible Screw Engagement

The open-end construction allows the mating screw to extend beyond the threaded portion of the insert.

This can provide additional design flexibility where the available backside clearance permits a longer screw.

Unlike a closed-end rivet nut, the open-end configuration does not enclose the threaded cavity or prevent the passage of contaminants through the insert.

For applications requiring environmental sealing, engineers should evaluate a suitable closed-end design and any necessary sealing features.

5. Single-Sided Installation Without Welding

Countersunk knurled blind rivet nuts can be installed using a compatible rivet nut setting tool.

The tool engages the internal thread and applies an axial pulling force, causing the deformable section of the rivet nut body to collapse behind the panel.

The resulting backside bulge mechanically retains the insert.

This process avoids welding and provides a reusable internal thread in materials that may be too thin for conventional tapping.

Manual, pneumatic, hydraulic, or automated setting equipment may be selected according to production requirements.

Engineering Design Considerations

Countersink Geometry

The mounting hole must incorporate a countersink that matches the fastener head.

An incorrect countersink angle or depth can result in poor seating, uneven load distribution, or damage to the surrounding panel.

The countersink must not remove excessive supporting material.

For very thin panels, a reduced-head rivet nut or another fastening configuration may be more appropriate.

Panel Thickness and Grip Range

The published product-series grip range is 0.5–5.0 mm.

However, this does not mean that every thread size or countersunk configuration can be installed successfully throughout the entire range.

The actual usable grip interval depends on the individual rivet nut dimensions and the remaining material thickness beneath the countersink.

For full countersunk designs, panel thicknesses above approximately 1.5 mm may be preferable in some configurations,

but the actual minimum must be established from the approved drawing and installation tests.

Installation Hole Tolerance

Hole diameter is critical to installation performance.

An oversized hole may reduce knurl engagement and spin-out resistance.

An undersized hole may damage the rivet nut or host material during installation.

For repeatable OEM production, mounting hole tolerances should be included in the approved engineering documentation.

Installation Stroke and Backside Deformation

The setting tool must apply sufficient stroke to form the required backside retaining bulge.

Insufficient deformation can reduce retention strength.

Excessive deformation can damage internal threads or distort the mounting panel.

Installation trials should establish the correct setting parameters for each combination of rivet nut size, panel material, and grip thickness.

Blue Zinc Versus Color Zinc Rivet Nuts

Both blue zinc and color zinc finishes can provide sacrificial corrosion protection for steel fasteners.

Their appearance differs because of the plating and passivation system used.

Blue zinc typically has a silver-blue appearance, while color zinc may exhibit yellow or iridescent tones.

Neither appearance alone determines corrosion resistance.

OEM engineers and purchasing teams should compare the actual coating specifications, passivation chemistry,

coating thickness, and validated corrosion performance rather than selecting solely by color.

For controlled production, the required finish should be stated explicitly on the drawing or purchasing specification.

Industrial Applications

Automotive and Commercial Vehicle Components

These rivet nuts can be used in selected non-structural brackets, interior panels, removable covers, and fabricated mounting components.

The countersunk head provides clearance, while the knurled body can improve resistance to rotation during service.

Electrical Enclosures and Control Equipment

Suitable applications include access panels, internal mounting brackets, and sheet metal equipment housings.

Electrical continuity, grounding, and environmental sealing must be evaluated separately where required.

Industrial Machinery and Equipment

Potential uses include machine guards, fabricated covers, removable maintenance panels, and mechanical equipment housings.

Railway Interior Assemblies

Countersunk knurled rivet nuts may be considered for non-structural interior components, equipment covers, and selected panel assemblies.

Mechanical qualification, vibration performance, and project-specific requirements must be verified before use.
