1. Engineering Overview

Surface finishing in fasteners is primarily designed for:

  • Corrosion resistance

  • Mechanical durability

  • Environmental compliance (RoHS / REACH)

  • Functional protection

 Visual appearance is a secondary and non-standardized result of the electrochemical process.

2. Zinc Plating Appearance Categories

Clear / Blue Zinc

Typical finish:

  • Silver / light blue tone

  • Slight iridescence

Applications:

  • Automotive fasteners

  • Electronics

  • General OEM assemblies

Yellow Zinc

Typical finish:

  • Golden yellow

  • Light yellow / rainbow variation

Notes:

  • Strong variation depending on the chemistry system

  • Trivalent and hexavalent systems differ significantly

Black Zinc

Typical finish:

  • Matte black

  • Gloss black/dark gray

Applications:

  • Automotive trim fasteners

  • Industrial assemblies

Zinc Nickel Coating

Typical finish:

  • Silver gray / blue-gray

Performance:

  • 720h–1000h salt spray resistance

  • High corrosion protection

  • EV & new energy vehicle systems

Hot Dip Galvanized

Typical finish:

  • Dark gray

  • Rough and thick coating

Applications:

  • Construction

  • Structural steel fasteners

3. Why Zinc Plating Color Varies

Color variation is influenced by:

  • Plating chemistry systems

  • Trivalent vs hexavalent chromate

  • Coating thickness

  • Steel substrate differences

  • Production batch variation

  • Process control conditions

  • Lighting and photography

The same plating specification does NOT guarantee identical visual appearance between manufacturers or production batches.

4. RoHS-Compliant Zinc Plating Appearance

Modern environmental compliance requires trivalent chromate systems.

Key differences vs legacy coatings:

Hexavalent (Legacy):

  • Bright yellow

  • High color saturation

  • Strong rainbow effect

Trivalent (RoHS compliant):

  • Softer tone

  • Lighter color

  • Reduced visual intensity

Color matching between these systems is technically not realistic.

5. Engineering Acceptance Standard

Unless otherwise specified, acceptance should be based on:

Coating thickness
Salt spray corrosion resistance
Mechanical performance
RoHS / REACH compliance

NOT visual color matching.
