Hollow Rivets (Semi-tubular Rivets) and Solid Rivets

Mar. 03, 2023

Comprehensive Guide to Rivets – Solid, Semi-Tubular, Step & Blind Rivets

Rivets are permanent mechanical fasteners designed to join two or more materials, such as metal sheets, plastics, composites, and even ceramics. During installation, the tail end of the rivet is deformed—either pressed, hammered, or pulled—to secure the components firmly.

At Juxin Fasteners, we maintain an extensive inventory of rivets and related fasteners, including solid, semi-tubular, step, and blind rivets, in multiple materials, head types, and dimensions, making us a trusted supplier for automotive, aerospace, industrial, and construction applications.

1. Hollow Rivets (Semi-Tubular Rivets)

Semi-tubular rivets have a tubular body with a shallow hole at the tip, allowing the tail to expand outward during installation, reducing required force by up to 75% compared to solid rivets.

Key Applications:

  • Light fixtures, HVAC ducts, electronics, ladders, brakes

  • Non-load-bearing joints requiring pivot points or      movement

Advantages:

  • Lightweight and easy to install

  • Ideal for soft or thin materials

  • Available in cold or hot riveting versions

  • Sealed variants offer waterproof and corrosion-resistant      performance

Specifications:

  • Lengths: 1/16" to 2-15/16"

  • Body diameters: 1/16" to 3/8"

  • Head styles: Flat, Oval, Pan, Truss

  • Materials: Aluminum, Brass, Copper, Steel, Stainless Steel      (18-8, 430)

2. Solid Rivets

Solid rivets are fully solid fasteners, known for their simplicity, reliability, and long history—dating back to the Bronze Age (~3000 BCE).

Features:

  • Strong, permanent joints for high-reliability applications

  • Installed by hammering or pressing the tail

  • Suitable for aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding, and      industrial machinery

Materials & Options:

  • Aluminum, Brass, Copper, Monel, Steel, Stainless Steel,      Titanium Alloy

  • Body diameters: 1/16” to 9/32” (standard), 1/2” to 1-3/4”      (large)

  • Lengths: 3/32” to 8-1/2”

  • Head styles: Round, Flat, Countersunk, Protruding

  • Surface treatments: Galvanized, Chromium-plated, Blackened,      Phosphoric passivation

Installation Tools:

  • Pneumatic hammers, radial riveting machines, hydraulic presses,      servo presses

  • Crimping pliers and electromagnetic riveting equipment for      precision or lightweight applications

3. Step Rivets

Step rivets allow controlled movement of assembled parts while keeping components securely attached. Ideal for pre-positioning nuts or workpieces that must remain stationary during assembly.

Benefits:

  • Ensures stability in complex assemblies

  • Optimizes production efficiency

  • Compatible with automated and semi-automated assembly lines

4. Blind Rivets

Blind rivets can be installed from one side of a component, making them ideal for enclosed or inaccessible areas.

  • Available in dome head, countersunk, large flange, and      self-plugging variants

  • Materials: Aluminum, Steel, Stainless Steel, Monel, Copper

  • Applications: Automotive interiors, electronic housings,      construction panels, lightweight machinery

Advantages:

  • No access needed on the opposite side

  • Compatible with coated, painted, or delicate materials

  • Quick installation and low labor costs

Solid Rivets

Solid rivets are among the simplest, most reliable, and oldest fasteners. Solid rivets, as the name implies, are fully solid and generally cylindrical; they are usually divided into two types, one with a cylindrical body and one with a flange; the common types of the flange are the round head, flat round head, flat head, protruding head, etc., depending on the actual use of the occasion. Solid rivets are generally made of aluminum alloy, carbon steel, stainless steel, titanium alloy, copper alloy, etc. The surface treatment is mainly galvanized, chromium plating, phosphoric acid passivation, electroplating, blackening, and other methods. The riveting installation of solid rivets is through a certain external force on one end of the rivet, the other end fixed, or both ends at the same time under the action of external force, and then through a certain shape of the rivet punch mold and molding. Solid rivet installation tools have a variety of types, including common radial riveting machines (also known as pendulum riveting machines), pneumatic riveting hammers, pneumatic presses, pneumatic, hydraulic presses, servo presses, crimping pliers, electromagnetic riveting equipment and other tools and equipment. Pneumatic riveting hammers, crimping pliers, and electromagnetic riveting equipment are mostly used in the aerospace industry, and solid rivets cover almost all applications, such as automotive seats, aircraft fuselage, skin connections, etc. Archaeologists have found evidence of solid rivet use dating as far back as the Bronze Age (circa 3000 BCE). These simple devices consist of a solid shaft with a head on one end; once installed, the headless end of a solid rivet is deformed with a hammer or rivet gun to hold it in place. Perhaps the most widely used style of rivets, solid rivets, are utilized in applications where reliability and safety are important. Juxin Enterprise stocks a huge selection of solid rivets.
