What Are Self-Clinching Threaded Studs?

Self-clinching threaded studs are permanently installed into ductile sheet metal using a controlled pressing process. During installation, specially designed ribs and an annular groove displace the surrounding panel material, creating a strong mechanical interlock that permanently secures the stud.

Unlike welded studs, self-clinching studs require no heat input, eliminating weld distortion, spatter, and post-weld finishing while maintaining excellent mechanical performance.

Standard Installation Procedure

Create a correctly sized punched hole according to the recommended dimensional specifications.

Do not deburr or perform secondary machining operations, as these may reduce fastening performance.

Step 2 – Position the Stud

Insert the threaded stud through the punched side of the panel and align it with the installation anvil.

Step 3 – Apply Installation Force

Using a hydraulic, pneumatic, or servo press, apply a controlled squeezing force while maintaining parallel punch and anvil surfaces.

The panel material flows into the annular groove, permanently locking the stud.
